Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Title: Station Mitake: Akushichibyôe Kakekiyo
Series: Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidô Road
Date: 6/1852

The rogue warrior Kagekiyo stands defiantly on the shoulder of the Great Buddha at Tôdai-ji Temple in Nara during his last stand. Here there are only three elements; the Great Buddha, the warrior and the pagoda at Tôdai-ji Temple. This combines the drama of a warrior print with that of a kabuki print. The clouds have been unusually rendered, and the butterfly landscape cartouche refers to the Taira clan, of which Kakekiyo is a member.

Condition: Excellent impression. Very good color and condition. Minor printer’s smudge in sky.
