Hirai Yasumasa plays the flute amidst a field of rushes as his would-be assassin Hakamadare Yasusuke is halted by the beauty of the music, drawn sword in hand. Two flutes create the outline of the inset landscape. This is the same story that Yoshitoshi illustrated in his famous “Flute Player” triptych. Station 41 from the series “69 Stations of the Kisokaidô”.
