This is the scene from the Kabuki drama ”Nobori koi taki no shirohata“. The center is the courtesan Wakakusa of Wakana-ya tea house, who ran away with a boatman Inosuke, who is on the left sheet, marked “ukiyo no Inosuke“. Wakakusa and Inosuke hide at Sainen, who is a monk practicing asceticism. However rascal Kohei on the right sheet, marked “enma no Kohei“ lives in the next neighborhood and Inosuke gets in trouble with him. It eventually comes out that Kohei is the father of Inosuke and Wakakusa, namely the lovers are brother and sister.
