Kunisada: Jiraiya Wielding Gun and Archer in Wolf Skin Triptych (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Actor in Wolf Costume; Jiraiya holding Gun
Date: 1852

Nighttime scene on a stretched bridge. Actors from left: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in the role of Jiraiya, master of Frog Magic; Arashi Rikan III as Takasago Yuminosuke; Ichikawa Ebizo V in the role of Yasha Goro. From the kabuki play "Jiraiya goketsu monogatari". Jiraiya holds a gun in his right hand, and looks right towards Yominosuke, who is dressed in wolf skins, holds a flaming torch in his teeth and holds a long bow in his hands. Yasha Goro (another name for Orochimaru) is drawing his sword from its hilt. We see a crescent moon below the bridge, so the scene must be high up in the air, the woven bridge stretched between two cliffs.
