Kunisada: Three Varieties of Benkei actor triptych (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Three Varieties of Benkei actor triptych
Date: 1860
“Tailor-made Three Colors of Benkei” (O-atsurae san-shoku Benkei). Three tattooed actors are shown posing as Benkei against a plaid background. This checked pattern is known as Benkei lattice (Benkei-kôshi), and is shown in three colors here, so the name is a pun referring to both the background and the three various figures of Benkei. The actors are captured in flowing poses, and the juxtaposition against the static and graphic background gives it a very bold and modern feeling.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Extremely faint center fold, barely perceptible.
