Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Picture of Abalone Divers in Ise Province (Seishû awabi tori no zu)
Series: From an untitled series of ten landscapes.
Date: ca. 1832

We see men in boats cheerfully accepting abalone as harvested by the women, who wear only red cloths draped around their waists. We see one diver beneath the surface, ready to pry an abalone from its rocky home with a spatula-like tool as the fish swim around her. This series of landscapes includes some of Kunisada’s finest landscape designs, conceived when this genre was very popular. There are differences in the coloration as well as in the blocks for the waves and the clouds from this print (and the MFA’s) and the one pictured in “Kunisada’s World”. Rare.

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Some minor soiling and a tiny area of repair in the left corner.
