Title: Ichikawa Komazo VII as Nikki Danjo, Onoe Kikugoro IV as Tsubone Masaoka and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Matonosuke.
Date: 1855
The evil magician Nikki Danjo has conjured rat magic to steal a scroll, and he rises up in a cloud using a magical mudra, stolen scroll in his mouth at left. In the middle is Masaoka, holding a lantern while to the right Matonosuke manages to strike a pose while fighting three, life-sized rats with spears. The name of the play is Konoshita Kage Masago no Date-zome, which played at the Ichimura theater in 1855.. The actors shown are Nakamura Fukusuke I as Matsugae Matonosuke (R), Onoe Kikugorô IV as Tsubone Masaoka (C), and Ichikawa Komazô VII as Nikki Danjô (L). Beautifully printed, with deluxe printing effects that include mica in the sky and and extra pattern printed with a burnished effect on Danjo’s robe and lacquer-imitating effects on the black areas.
