Kunisada: Beauties in Snow with Umbrellas (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865)
Title: Twilight Snowfall at Ueno
Date: ca. 1847-50
Ueno no bosetsu. Three beauties with traditional Japanese umbrellas make their way across the snow in their layered kimono, the middle one stopping to adjust her geta. The high geta were used in snow, but must have been rather a challenge to walk in. In the background we see other visitors enjoying the popular sights. This area in Ueno is now a public park, and at that time there were Kaneiji Temple and Yushima Tenjin Shrine, both overlooking Shinobazu Pond.
