Kunichika: Onoe Kikugoro with Earth Spider Robe and Waterfall (Sold)
Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900)
Title: Onoe Kikugoro with Earth Spider Robe and Unrolled Scroll
Date: 1875
The kabuki actor Onoe Kikugoro unrolls a scroll, looking up in what must be a dramatic moment of realization during a specific scene. He wears a robe that is decorated with Tsuchigumo, the hideous earth spider, and its spreading web. Behind him is a waterfall and falling maple- and ginko leaves. Beautifully printed, with mica in the waterfall and lacquer-imitating printing in the black of his robe. This may be an example of a fantasy role, rather than this actor acting in a specific play. A fantastic example of the skills of the finest Meiji printers and carvers.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. With some areas of wormage.
