Kunichika: Nakamura Shikan and Waterfall with Image of Nue (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900)
Title: Nakamura Shikan and Waterfall
Date: 1875
Series: Mitate Suikoden Torodai (Mitate Suikoden with Waterfalls)

The kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan in the role of tattooed Suekichi. His hands are behind his back as he strikes a pose in front of a dramatic waterfall. His imitation back tattoo features what must be a magical nue, as we see flying maple- and ginko leaves and a swirling cloud as part of the tattoo design. Nue were thought to travel the air in clouds of black smoke, and had the characteristics of many different animals combined into a single supernatural entity. This first edition has hand-applied splashes of gofun to imitate the mist of the falls. This may be an example of a fantasy role, rather than this actor acting in a specific play.
