Kunichika: Ichikawa Danjuro as Magician Jiraiya at Kurohime Waterfall (Sold)
Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900)
Title: Humorous Comparison of the Scene at Mount Kurohime Waterfall (Mitate Kurohime-yama no taki)
Date: 1875
Fantasy role of Ichikawa Danjuro playing the role of the magician Jiraiya in front of Kurohimeyama waterfall. Here it seems that Jiraiya is raising his (iron?) fan and with concentration and a magical spell the rock in front of him is exploding. The play Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari was an extremely popular play, and Ichikawa Danjuro was a fantastically popular actor; as this series is a “mitate”, we may assume that this perfect theatrical marriage never actually took place, although many fans may have wished for it. Beautifully printed, with deluxe mica on the top of the waterfall and woodgrain evident in the blue of the actor's robe.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Areas of small wormage, and fold along left margin.
Dimensions: ôban (35 x 25 cm)
Signature: Toyohara Kunichika hitsu (with toshidama seal)
