Mitate (fantasy depiction) of Ichikawa Sadanji hoisting a carved image of Fudo Myô-o above his head. He is in the role of Hako-o-maru, the young hero Soga no Goro. He is posed in front of Fudo Waterfall and wears a deep red robe with designs of maple leaves and the image of a deer.Fudo Myô-o is associated with numerous impressive waterfalls in Japan. Prints that showed imaginary portraits of popular actors seemed quite popular in the late 19th century–perhaps akin to today’s fantasy football.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Areas of minor wormage. Unbacked. A light crease may be seen.
