Kunichika: A Woman Reading a Page-Turner (SOLD)
Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900)
Title: Woman Reading a Book
Series: Mirror of Modern Customs and Manners 開花人情鏡
Date: 1878 (Meiji 11)
A married woman takes a moment to herself; she bites down on her inner kimono, completely absorbed in her reading. She must be engrossed in a page-turner as she leans back, her head resting on her pillow. We see the other two volumes of the book placed next to her, along with a tobacco pipe. This is a charming scene that many of us can relate to even today. Beautifully printed, there is a shiny pattern on the cover of the book and burnishing on the black of her kimono collar.
Condition: Excellent impression and color; very good condition. Backed, with small area of minor wormage near left margin.
