Koson 小原古邨 : Black-Naped Oriole on a Plum Branch 高麗鶯 (1st edition) (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Black-Naped Oriole on a Plum Branch 高麗鶯 コウライウグイス (First edition)
Date: Ca. 1910

A black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chensis) looks intently downwards from his perch on a branch of flowering plum. Koson has captured its stance and movement very effectively, its bright yellow plumage standing out against the subtle background. Sumptuously printed, this is a perfect example of Koson’s “printed paintings”, as the printers have captured the painterly effects that this artist is known for. Note the strong woodgrain in the sky, indicating an early impression. This work is from circa 1910, unlike many works that were re-published in the late 1920s and early 1930s. We can compare the woodgrain and other details with the first edition work that is shown  full-page  in “Crows, Cranes and Camellias”, page 49, number 19.  This work has never been framed and is in unusually fine condition for a work that is from early in Koson’s career. Quite scarce, especially in this condition.
