Koson 古邨 : Two Japanese Cranes 丹頂 (RESERVED)

Two magnificent Japanese Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) stand out against a greyish blue backdrop of dusk, the sky merging with the inferred water that they wade in. The white plumage of the two birds also serves to merge them together, with only the softest cream coloration on the foreparts of the crane in the front. This is one of the rarest cranes in the world, and has long symbolized peace, fidelity and longevity in Japan. There is today still a resident population in eastern Hokkaido, where the birds nest in wetlands and marshes. The woodgrain in the sky is very strong, with a very skillful bokashi blend. The artist has also chosen a sophisticated cropping of both of the birds, making the composition surprisingly dynamic.
