Koson 小原古邨 : Bullfinch on a Blossoming Plum Branch
Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Bullfinch on a Blossoming Plum Branch
Date: Circa 1920s-30s
A bullfinch focuses on an unseen object as it directs its attention down and to our left. It perches on a beautifully blossoming plum branch. The trunk of the plum branch has been rendered in the traditional style which mimics a Chinese ink painting. Verso is the prewar “Made in Japan” seal that prints intended for export in the 1930s were required to bear. This indicates that this work was printed in the late 1920s or early-to-mid 1930s.
