Konen: Japanese Castle at Dusk (Sold)

Nagoya Castle seems to emit a golden glow as it rises above slender trees that are mostly bare of leaves, their verticality emphasizing the height and dominance of the castle. Konen published most of his works with Kobayashi Bunshichi, whose shop was sadly destroyed in the 1923 earthquake. This is a prewar design that was most likely published by Watanabe Shôzaburô. Nagoya Castle was completed in 1615 by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it was the first castle in Japan to be designated a National Treasure. The original was destroyed by firebombing in 1945, but has since been rebuilt. There is little biographical information on Konen, but he studied painting with Kajita Hanko and Matsumoto Fûko (1840-1923).
