Koitsu: Summer Moon at Miyajima (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Summer Moon at Miyajima
Date: 1936 (this edition ca. 1950)

A full moon shines above the famous sea torii at Miyajima Shrine. Our view is from a verandah on the lake, and we see yellow hanging lanterns in the foreground and a solitary man poling a small wooden boat in the middle distance. The moonlight reflects in silver on the edges of the pillars and rails that face the moon. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950. These are the same seals that are in the Art Institute of Chicago example. With the seals of carver Harada and printer Yokoi.
