Koitsu: Spring Snow at Maruyama (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Spring Snow at Maruyama
Date: 1937 (this edition ca. late 1940s)

A woman and her young companion, both dressed very brightly and formally as if en route to a celebration, walk in their high geta towards a  bridge in Maruyama Park in Kyoto. As the park is in the heart of the Gion district, perhaps this is a geisha and her maiko. The park is famous for its huge weeping cherry tree, and indeed we see icy willow branches hanging down in the foreground. The clear green water of Gourd Pond is a nice contrast to the surrounding snowy landscape.  The park is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950.

Would make the perfect gift for the Japanophile in your circle.
