Koitsu: Rainy Night at Miyajima Shrine (Sold)
Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Rainy Evening at Miyajima Shrine
Date: 1941 (this edition ca. 1950)
The floating torii gate of Miyajima shrine is flanked by two stone lanterns that glow bright yellow, providing a nice contrast in this atmospheric evening view. We see the outline of a single deer and an overhanging pine as rain falls in thin, dark lines. Considered one of Koitsu’s best and most effective designs, also by this dealer. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950. The Art Institute of Chicago example also bears these exact publisher’s seals. With the seals of printer Yokoi and carver Harada.
