Kiyochika: Night Attack of the Soga Brothers
Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915)
Title: Night Attach of the Soga Brothers Triptych Date: 1882
Dynamic scene of the Soga brothers attack of Suketsune, their father’s murderer, at the shogun’s hunting camp. The older brother Juro wears a garment with butterflies, and the younger Goro wears a robe with stylized purple plovers. Juro draws his sword, his foot crushing a woven pillow, while Goro prepares to strike from behind. We see large bows and arrows for hunting stored on the right, as well as fabric walls and a mosquito net. The accomplice Oiso no Tora, Juro’s lover, kneels right while holding a lamp and watching the action with interest. Kiyochika does not often depict historical warrior scenes, so this is an interesting example.
