Kiyochika: Japanese Officers with Telescope (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915)
Title: Advance Disposition of Troops at Weihaiwei (Ikaiei shingun haichi no zu)
Date: 1895, 2nd Month

A Picture of Advanced Troop Disposition at Waihaiwei. Three Japanese officers gather on a promontory to assess where to direct troops. One peers through a long telescope, while another points downwards to the troops moving at left.  There is snow on the ground and a beautiful sunrise creates a burst of color in the sky. At left, two of the troops blow trumpets, perhaps to activate the troops’ movement. We see Japanese steam/sail ships docked at the harbor. This work was created in the final months of the Sino-Japanese War.

Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Some wrinkles.
