Artist: Junichiro Sekino (1914-1988)
Title: Nishijin (Kyoto) in Snow
Date: 1973
Nishijin no Yuki. Bird’s eye view of rooftops in Kyoto during a snowstorm. Sekino is known for his views of rooftops and for his strong sense of visual organization, and here we are treated to both. Bright yellow light shines from windows onto the paths along the narrow street at left. There is almost no sign of modern architecture in this very large work. Printed on Sekino’s watermarked paper. Sekino was one of the major postwar figures of the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement. He was largely self-taught, but was strongly influenced by the great Kochiro Onchi. He actually grew up near Munakata Shiko in Aomori, and although 11 years apart, they were friends. He won his first prize for a woodblock in 1935 at the 4th Nihon Hanga Kyokai. Pencil signed and numbered 47/128 at bottom.
