A rooster eyes the viewer as a white hen forages on the ground with six yellow chicks. One of the chicks has adorably clambered atop the back of the hen. The hen’s white feathers feature blindprinting. The scene is made more homey with the view of the mums that are climbing a slender bamboo fence in the background.  Sozan was a specialist in kacho-e, bird-and-flower pictures. Twenty-eight of his works are listed in the 1936 Watanabe catalog.
