Hoshi Jōichi: Starry night (A) (Sold)
Artist: Hoshi Jōichi
Title: Starry night (A)
Date: 1970
A semi-fantastical shape rises up against a golden celestial array. The shape of the tower seems organic and man-made at the same time, perhaps part of an alien landscape. Hoshi wrote in 1978: “The sky full of stars is another long-desired subject. I wish to reach the great extension of heaven and earth someday”. Hoshi employed a unique technique to render such astonishing effects, using woodblocks, gold leaf, oil paints and a blowtorch. He did all of the carving and printings of the works himself. Numbered 59/130 in pencil at bottom.
