Title: The Drum Bridge at Kameido Shrine (Kameido tenjin taikobashi)
Series: Rare Views of Famous Japanese Bridges (shokoku meikyô kiran)
Date: ca. 1834

This shrine, with its drum bridges, was one of the famous sights of ancient Edo. The Drum Bridge was built in 1662 and leads to the Kameido Tenjin Shrine (at right), a scenic spot replete with a wisteria-covered pergola and dedicated to the scholar Sugawara no Michizane. Townsmen admire the scenic architecture atop the bridge itself. For this series 11 bridges are known. This is very early impression in excellent condition, perhaps finer than the example in the Michener Collection.
