Hiroshi Yoshida 吉田博: Osaka Castle 大坂城 (Sold)
Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950)
Title: Osaka Castle 大坂城
Date: 1935
The white walls of the tower of Osaka Castle are reflected in the waters of the placid garden pond. As usual, Yoshida’s colors are perfectly true to life. We see a few visitors enjoying the grounds of the garden, whose features include a stone lantern overlooking the pond at left. Toyotomi Hideyoshi began construction on the original Osaka Castle in 1583; it was completed in 1597. In 1615 the castle fell to the Tokugawa clan and the castle was burned to the ground. Much of the castle was destroyed again in the Meiji Period, and in 1931 the ferroconcrete tenshu, or main tower that we see here, was constructed. During WWII much of the castle tower was damaged, and it was again restored in 1997, this last time to function as a modern museum.
