Groups of visitors are seen on the steps leading to Chion-in Temple Gate. It is springtime, and the cherry blossoms are blooming. It is interesting to note that everyone seems to be dressed in traditional Japanese kimono. Chion-in temple in Kyoto was founded in the 13th century, and the structures standing today date from the early 1600s. The colossal main gate (sanmon) is a National Treasure of Japan and is the largest surviving structure of its kind in Japan. Chion-in is home to Japan’s largest temple bell, which weighs 74 tons. An early edition whose printing was supervised by the artist.
