Hiroshige: Station Mariko (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige
Title: Station Mariko
Series: Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road (chûban)
Date: ca. 1842
Station number 21, Mariko. An interesting mix of travelers are stopping at a teahouse at the twenty-first station of the Tôkaidô Road. We see three men in traveling hats walking on the road, not interested in stopping. There are two palanquins, either waiting for their customers or looking to be hired by customers. Several people rest inside the tea shop, eating and drinking. It is possible that the two men seated whose legs are naked are palanquin bearers who are taking a rest. Of interest are what look like woodblock prints (two by Hiroshige, most likely) which have been hung on the wall of the teahouse.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Tiny nibbles in the top margin.
