This is one of six views of the Tamagawa (Crystal) Rivers. A travelling Buddhist priest with his assistant is standing by the river, viewing Mt. Kôya in the distance. Here is a poem by Kukai, which is collected in Fûgashû, the poem collection completed in the 14th century. This is from Hiroshige’s strongest series on the Six Crystal Rivers.
He is on the pilgrimage of sixty-six stations. This series has one poem each, referencing the beauty of each of the rivers. Hiroshige did the same series in horizontal format published by Tsuta-ya (Tenpô period 1831-45) before this vertical series.
Condition: Excellent impression. Very good color and condition. Smudge in sky, upper left.
