This famous snow scene is effortlessly executed with perfect geometry: the eye follows a pair of sparrows, along the diagonally slanted lumber to the pair of puppies, down to an umbrella whose spines point back up to two men poling logs in straw capes and back up along the water into the distance. The diagonals and verticals and horizontals are perfectly geometric and harmonious, without a shred of effort or artifice showing; this is the genius of Hiroshige! One of the best snow designs in this incomparable and influential series.
