View from the window of a mid-ranking courtesan in the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The signs of the occupant are everywhere, although she is sensed rather than seen. We see tissues, hair pins, a mouth-rinsing bowl and towel--perhaps she has just said goodbye to a client. Her white cat watches with detachment the huge procession of people in the fields of the middle distance. The crowds are gathered for the Torinomachi Festival, the busiest day of the year in the Yoshiwara.

A scene from the window of a brothel in the Yohshiwara pleasure district. One can see the hairpins, tissues, mouth-rinsing bowl and towel of a mid-ranking courtesan. A huge procession of people in the middle distance is watched with detachment by the white cat on the sill. It is the day of the Torinomachi Festival, and the busiest day of the year in the Yoshiwara.
