The viewer is taken to the heart of one of Edo’s most important shrines in a scene of poignant expectantancy. A priest, a shrine maiden and an attendant all look towards the site of the rising sun. The scene is anchored by a fantastic cedar tree. Smith II describes this design as “masterful” and he praises “The astonishing subtlety of technique in this accomplished print...”.
