One of the strongest designs from “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”. A very early impression of this famous print, with strong woodgrain in the sky and bokashi on several parts of the tree. Provenance: Huguette Beres collection (seal on reverse)
To some, the changes from the first edition, including the darkest part of the water being at the very bottom and the sky being red rather than purple are esthetic improvements over the first edition. The close-up picture of the pine tree with a looped branch at the Shinobazu pond; in the distance, over the commoners’ houses, the sky is red.
