Hasui 巴水: Moon Over Izura 五浦の月 (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title:Moon Over Izura (Izura no tsuki: Ibaragi) 五浦の月
Date: 1952
We see the Rokkakudo, a hexagonal wooden building that was built in 1905 as an artist’s retreat along the famously scenic Izura coast in Ibaraki. Here it already seems to be in a state of rustic disrepair, but the view from it must have been stunning. It was swept out to see in the 2011 tsunami, but has since been rebuilt and is open to the public. A full moon rises over the glassy sea, and a lone figure in a small boat is seen rowing towards the right. The textured printing on the rocks and pines serves as a contrast to the smooth printing of the sea and sky. First edition, with the round postwar Watanabe seal in the lower right corner.
