Ikegami Ichinokura (sekiyô). The sun sets a brilliant red against what are perhaps rows of tea fields and a line of tall evergreen trees. A single farmer heads home, hoe over her shoulder and white sleeve lending a bright splash against the earthen embankment. Narazaki wrote “There are two versions of this image... This scene has greatly changed, and today it is a drab, densely built-up area of houses. Such realistic depictions by Hasui have become valuable sources of cultural information. In this respect, he approximates the print designer Utagawa Hiroshige.” It is indeed difficult to believe that is what part of Tokyo looked like less than 100 years ago. With the earliest Watanabe seal for this design, lower right. According to “Fresh Impressions” (Toledo Museum), the edition was 300.
