Hasui 巴水: Snow on a Clear Day at Miyajima (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Snow on a Clear Day at Miyajima 宮島
Date: 1921
Seiten no yuki, Miyajima. Hasui has captured the rare moment when snow falls from a seemingly clear sky, with a puffy cloud in the middle distance. The red shrine buildings are reflected in the blue water, with snow falling across the entire design. Narazaki wrote “In this view white clouds have suddenly emerged due to a sudden blustery wind in the wintry sky. The vermilion-lacquered Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima is depicted against an expanse of indigo blue that connotes both sea and sky. The snow blows diagonally across the picture plane, the hanging lanterns sway.” The shrine is on the island of Itsukushima in Hiroshima Prefecture, and dates from before the 12th century. It is considered one of Japan’s three beauty spots.
