Hasui 巴水: Snow at Mukojima 雪の向嶋 (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬 巴水
Title: Snow at Mukojima 雪の向嶋
Date: December, 1931
Yuki no Mukojima. A boatman and his passenger can be seen in this beautiful twilight snow scene. The snow falls in irregular patterns due to gusts of wind, and each snowflake is slightly different, attesting to the dedication and expertise of the printers. The lit window on the water beckons warmly, reminding the viewer that even in stormy weather the comfort of home is near. In finest Hasui style, the elements of the composition layer upon each other, creating depth and the feeling for the viewer of experiencing an exact place and time. This is the earliest Watanabe seal used for this work, employed only between 1927 and 1932. Due to the scarcity of originals and the beauty of the design, this work was copied and prints from new blocks were produced in recent decades, but these works are easy to differentiate from original editions. Provenance: Ex-collection of the Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu. This exact work is illustrated in the Tokyo Bijutsu 2013 Japanese catalog of Hasui (page 87).
