Hasui: Sanpoji Pond, Shakujii 三寶寺池(石神井)(Sold)

Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Sanpôji Pond, Shakujii 三寶寺池(石神井)
Date: October, 1930

A softly yellow three-quarter moon rises at dusk above the tranquil Shanpoji Pond. Although Shakujii Park is in Tokyo, it is known for its beautiful natural acoustics and many bird species. Hasui’s unique strength as an artist is his ability to capture a specific place and time so poetically that it elicits a feeling of nostalgia for a scene, even a place we may never have visited in person. This example is completely unfaded, with the deep green of the lily pads and a deep yellow moon. First edition, with the earliest Watanabe seal for this design.
