Hasui 巴水 : Muroto Promontory, Tosa 土佐室戸崎 (First Edition) (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Muroto Promontory, Tosa 土佐室戸崎 (First Edition) Date: undated, ca. 1927
Twilight view from a rocky shoreline, with distant clouds lingering on the horizon above a placid sea. The sun must be setting to our right, as we see its brightness reflected in the large rock as well as on the distant edge of the water. Hasui has captured the exact colors and behavior of the waves as he witnessed them at this lookout; the dusky blue atmosphere indicates early morning or early evening in this tranquil seaside view. The Muroto promontory is noted for its rocky coastline and subtropical climate; today it is part of the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park in Kôchi Prefecture. This print bears the “Rumi” seal of the publisher Bijutsusha, lower right, which indicates a first edition.
