Title: Morning Sea at Shiribeshi, Bikuni 後志美国 朝海

Series: Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition  Date: December, 1932

Dawn paints the sky a vivid purple, with hanging clouds reflecting a deep pink. The reflected waves are lavender, with pinkish foam as the breakers recede. Shiribeshi is today a Subprefecture, located on the southern side of Hokkaido, about 90 km west of Sapporo, and was once famous for its herring fishery. Shakotan is today home to a national marine sanctuary. This exact location may be from just south of Bikuni Harbor on the Shakotan Peninsula, perhaps near Cape Ogon. Hasui created only a handful of views of Hokkaido, which corresponds to his infrequent travels there when compared to the other areas of Japan. It would have taken several days of travel, including multiple trains and a ferry in 1932. Mint first edition, with the Watanabe seal used between 1930 and 1942. Scarce with these unfaded colors.
