Hasui 川瀬 巴水: Minuma River, Ômiya 大宮 見沼川 (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Minuma River, Ômiya 大宮 見沼川
Date: 1930

Narazaki sums it up perfectly: “The composition is unified by its dark tones. Two stars sparkle in the sky and fireflies, sprinkling the sky like stars, dance along the pitch-dark riverside. In the centre ground a light shines through the shoji door of a farmhouse in the shadow of the woods, the reflection flickering on the surface of the water.” Hasui’s design genius and the peerless artisan printers have given great depth to this print, which is quite astonishing given the limited range of tones in the landscape. With the earliest publisher’s seal used at this time. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu, former curator of the Folk Museum of Ota City. This exact print is shown full-page in the 2013 Japanese catalog “The Art of Kawase Hasui’ (Tokyo Bijutsu), page 74.
