Hasui: Kegon Falls, Nikkô (Nikkô Kegon-no-taki) (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Kegon Falls, Nikkô (Nikkô Kegon-no-taki)
Date: 1931, autumn

The celebrated Kegon Waterfall flows past autumn foliage and highly textured cliffs. The water is dark blue at the top and transforms to mist at the bottom. There is blindprinting in the water, which is very unusual for a Hasui print. Falling water must be one of the most challenging effects to depict using woodblock printing. Narazaki wrote “The force of the cascading waterfall would be difficult to convey in the woodblock medium, looking staid and unrealistic, and such works are rarely successful. But this is an excellent piece, in the depiction of the power and the volume of the water.” The contributions of the carver and printer cannot be underestimated, especially in such a relatively large work.
