  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Enoshima Island
Date: 1952

This view from the verandah of an inn represented the month of August in the 1953 Calendar for Pacific Transport Lines. Narazaki wrote “This clear nocturne illustrates the right half of the island of Enoshima as viewed through the railing of an upstairs verandah near the Iwamoto Inn”. This set was commissioned for distribution in the United States within the tradition of meisho-e, (pictures of famous views). We see the title of the work and the name of the artist printed in the lower margin. This is the August image for the 1953 Calendar for the Pacific Transport Lines. These works are surprisingly rare, as most of the 500 copies of the calendar were discarded after use. Provenance: Personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu.
