Hasui 巴水: Clearing After a Snowfall on Mount Fuji 富士の雪渓田子の浦 (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Clearing After a Snowfall on Mount Fuji (Taganoura Beach) 富士の雪渓(田子の浦
Date: 1932
The peak of Fuji-san is colored pink with the clear rays of sunset following a day of heavy snowfall. Hasui has chosen to frame the famous mountain with the snow-laden boughs of pine trees. This is an early, unfaded example from the first prewar edition, sealed Doi Sadaichi. This exact work has been published in the 2013 Tokyo Bijutsu catalog on Hasui that was authored by the Hasui expert Hisao Shimizu. Provenance: from the personal collection of the late Hisao Shimizu, former curator of the Ota City Folk Museum in Tokyo. As the slightest amount of fading on this work strongly diminishes the impact of it, it is always recommended to look for unfaded examples, as here. Published by Doi Sadaichi in 1932. Hotei #266. See Hisao Shimizu’s “Works of Kawase Hasui”, published in 2013 by Tokyo Bijutsu. This exact print is shown on page 90. First editions that were published before WWII and bear the Doi Sadaiichi seal at left are very scarce. The colors on these early editions are actually a but more soft and subtle than the postwar Hangaten editions, even when unfaded, as here. Please see our article here regarding the recently published Hasui prints that bear the Doi Sadaichi seal. This published work of excellent provenance is perfect to compare as an authentic prewar printing.
