(Tabi miyage dai isshû, Shiobara Arayu no aki). Hasui wrote “Although during the summer the Ara Spa in Shiobara is quite crowded with visitors from other regions, in autumn it is a very lonely place. It was for this reason that the mood of the mountain spa inns was so rich, and one that I found intriguing. I felt that the contrast between the indigo blue of the distant mountains, the vivid autumnal colors of the foreground mountain and still dark inns on either side of the composition was interesting. I illustrated the quiet of the spa late in autumn.” The contrasting textures of sky, tree and buildings may also be noted.
