Hasui 巴水: Clearing After Snow In the Pines 松の雪晴 (SOLD)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Clearing After Snow In the Pines (Matsu no yukibare) 松の雪晴
Date: 1929
Pristine snowscape that demonstrates the expertise in conveying richness and texture of the publishing team of Kawaguchi and Sakai. Two snow-laden pines are captured against a sky of many hues. When unfaded, as here, the sky contains lavender and orange clouds against a richly textured blue sky. The margins of each snow-covered branch have been printed in an almost unique fashion to convey the texture of a conifer tree. For this design there are two numbered editions that were published by both Kawaguchi and Sakai; this is from the second edition and is numbered verso 184/350. The seal in the left margin contains the names of the printer and carver, also indicating an early edition. With the “Made in Japan” seal that indicates that it was intended for export in the early 1930s or even in 1929. The notch at lower right was made by the printer to allow for registration of the woodblocks in the kento notch.
