Hasui 巴水: The Great Buddha, Kamakura 鎌倉大仏 (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui (1883-1957)
Title: The Great Buddha, Kamakura 鎌倉大仏
Date: 1930
The Great Buddha in Kamakura serenely gazes out over his visitors, dappled shade from an unseen tree being cast from the left. There are two versions of this design; in one the Buddha shown in a much darker shade, and this one, which shows the figure in full sun. This statue of Amida Buddha has a height of 11.4 meters, and was built of bronze in 1252. The original temple hall which housed it was destroyed by a tsunami in 1495, and ever since the Buddha has been exposed to the open air--here we see two pigeons seated on his hands. With the Watanabe seal used between 1930 and 1942. Provenance; From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu.
