A sunny autumn view that feels reminiscent of Hiroshige with its sharply cropped and bold foreground tree. As Narazaki notes “Hasui depicted the picturesque scenery of Senjo cliff previously. In this example he illustrates a foreground tree, its wizened leaves turning yellowish and falling, even though it is still early autumn. Opposite is the bizarrely shaped cliff at Senjô, hemmed with autumnal foliage. The surface of the lake is serene: The reflection of the Senjo cliff on the water, upon which a single, white-sailed boat is afloat, is effective...This piece was sketched on 28 October 1932, produced in December and published in January 1933.” Narazaki also noted that there are two versions; this seems to be the darker version, without the yellow in the water. With the Watanabe seal that was used beginning in 1932. Also bears the “Made in Japan” seal that was used on works exported in the late 1920s-early 1930s.
