Hasui has depicted with woodblocks one of nature’s most ephemeral phenomena--a brilliant rainbow. The bright flash of color appears over what was used to be the village of Kanita in Aomori prefecture, the front of clouds seen retreating to the right. This small town was merged along with two neighboring villages to create the town of Sotogahama in 2005, so along with most of this view, the town with the name in the title no longer exists. Although the rain has stopped, the streets are still slick with moisture. First edition, with the earliest Watanabe seal for this design, lower left. This exact print was published in the Folk Museum of Ota City catalog “Hasui Kawase Exhibition Catalog” (2007), page 51, number 108. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu.
